Announced by Kofi Annan and officially launched at the UN in New York on July 2000, the United Nations Global Compact is an initiative that encourages implementation of socially responsible policies. The ten principles on which the Global Compact is based include the areas of: human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
The UN Global Compact (UNGC) was launched in Macedonia by UNDP in December 2004, and currently has 43 companies, non-governmental organizations and other parties as members. The Global Compact Network in Macedonia is the first Network in the country solely devoted to the improvement of corporate social responsibility.
The establishment of the CSR body is a direct achievement of the UNGC and serves as a role model for institutional support of CSR in the whole region. The CSR body, through support of UNDP and other donors, developed the National Agenda for CSR 2008-2012 which was consequently adopted by the Government. The CSR body also established the annual National CSR Award.
Konekt, as current Secretariat of the Macedonian Global Compact Network , actively works for its future development. Namely, this year we plan reactivation of the network and more active inclusion of the members. The new activities will be primarily focused on:
- Promotion of the network and its principles connected to corporate social responsibility(CSR);
- Promotion of the activities of members in this domain;
- Sharing of good practices and support of members in improving their CSR practices;
- Expanding the membership.
The new plans for the development of the network were presented at the Macedonian Global Compact Netwok Conference.
