Тhe European based Global Compact Local Networks are having regular communication and collaboration among themselves.Тhey undertake initiatives that confirms the Global Compact as a strong sustainability initiative. For this purpose regional meeting of the European networks is organized annually which is usually connected to a conference dedicated to corporate social responsibility.
Оn October 26 - 28, 2011 in Rome UN Global Compact Local Networks Meeting was held, hosted by the by the Global Compact Network Italy. Ms. Nikica Kusinikova from Konekt participated on this meeting as representative of the Secretariat of the Macedonian Global Compact Network.
The thematic conference was concentrated on the Public-Private Joint Efforts Towards Rio+20. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 that will take place in Brazil on 20-22 June 2012 is envisaged as a Conference at the highest possible level, including Heads of State and Government from the whole world. It is expected Rio+20 to result in a focused political document which will secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development. The UN Global Compact within the coalition Business Action for Sustainable Development will serve as business voice at Rio+20 ensuring that the business sector is recognized as a solutions provider for sustainable development. For this purpose, the UN Global Compact will submit Declaration with specific recommendations "Corporate Sustainability Leadership: A Framework for Action at Rio +20 and Beyond" to the participants at Rio +20.
The Conference was focused on public-private joint efforts for sustainable development from different aspects. The conference themes were selected and defined in cooperation with all the European Networks. They included: Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture; Green Jobs and Social Inclusion; and Sustainable Cities. Beside a conference on these topics, training on implementation of the 10th Global Compact principle of Anti-Corruption.
The second part of the Meeting was dedicated to networking among the members of the European networks and the challenges they face in their work. The changes of the types of membership and in the communication on progress introduced by the Global Compact and its implications for membership in the local Global Compact networks were discussed. Eventually, it was agreed that the 2012 Annual Meeting of the European Global Compact Networks will be held in Belgrade, organized by the Serbian Global Compact Network.
