The multi-faceted George Clooney is one of the top box-office stars in the world, as well as one of the sexiest men alive. In addition to being an actor, director and producer he makes himself available to philanthropies from Sudan to the U.S. as well as being a Lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Clooney famously founded Not On Our Watch with his Ocean’s 11 co-stars Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and producer Jerry Weintraub. The organization’s main goal is to stop the genocide occurring in Sudan. Clooney has visited the area several times personally, and spoken with victims of rape and torture. His charity has donated millions of dollars to help those suffering in the region, with much of the funding going through the United Nations World Food Programme.
Clooney has long campaigned for peace in the Sudan – with his father, journalist Nick Clooney, he filmed a documentary there in 2008 to chronicle the atrocities in the troubled Darfur region after the country was embroiled in civil war. After the release of the documentary he met with President Barack Obama to discuss the issue. George Clooney initiated the Satellite Sentinel Project (SSP) while on an October 2010 trip to Southern Sudan with Enough Project Co-founder John Prendergast. SSP combines satellite imagery analysis and field reports with Google's Map Maker technology. The project provides an early warning system to deter full-scale civil war between Northern and Southern Sudan and to promote greater accountability for mass atrocities.
