NATALIE PORTMAN – The Oscar-winning star of BLACK SWAN, and a new mom, is a devoted supporter of FINCA INTERNATIONAL (Foundation for International Community Assistance) which provides microfinancing to the poorest future entrepreuners, primarily women, in developing countries. “It definitely makes you realize how it’s really just luck where you’re born and what opportunities you’re given.”
Natalie, Israeli-born, wanted to work with Queen Rania of Jordan, a Palestinian, because she’d read of the wonderful work she was doing. Queen Rania is chair of Village Banking and Natalie is Ambassador of Hope at FINCA. They have worked on many projects together.
She is also a staunch vegetarian, who not only does not wear leather herself, but has designed a line of shoes using no leather to make it easier for other vegetarians to go without animal skins on their feet.Natalie made the decision to become vegetarian when she was 8, because she saw her dad demonstrating laser surgery on a chicken. Now, as she says, three times a day she makes a decision not to eat things that have been killed.
Natalie is also a strong supporter of FREE THE CHILDREN, which helps protect exploited children, removing them from danger, and giving them the possibility of attending school. It empowers youth to make a difference, by working together to free children from poverty and exploitation.
Natalis is a Harvard University graduate, who put her motion picture career on hold in order to complete her College studies and earned a degree in psychology and had several articles published in scientific journals.
